System Upgrades & Financing with Mass Save®

Mass Save is a collaborative initiative among Massachusetts’ electric and natural gas utilities and energy efficiency service providers, aiming to help residents and businesses reduce energy consumption and costs through various programs and incentives. One of their key offerings is substantial rebates and financing options for the installation of energy-efficient heat pumps.

Heat Pump Incentives:

  • Whole-Home Air Source Heat Pumps: Residents who install air source heat pumps as the sole source of heating and cooling can receive rebates of $3,000 per ton, up to a maximum of $10,000. To qualify, homes must meet specific weatherization standards to ensure energy efficiency.
  • Partial-Home Air Source Heat Pumps: For those integrating heat pumps to work alongside existing heating systems, rebates are available at $1,250 per ton, up to $10,000. Installation of integrated controls is required to optimize the efficiency between the heat pump and existing systems.
  • Ground Source Heat Pumps: Also known as geothermal systems, these are eligible for rebates of $15,000 for whole-home installations.
  • Air to Water Heat Pumps: These systems, which distribute heating via water piped through the home, qualify for rebates of $3,000 per ton, up to $10,000.

Enhanced Incentives:
Income-eligible customers may qualify for enhanced rebates, offering up to $16,000 for whole-home heat pump installations. Eligibility is determined based on household income and existing heating fuel types, such as oil, propane, or electric resistance.

Financing Options:
To further support energy-efficient upgrades, Mass Save offers the HEAT Loan program, providing 0% financing for eligible improvements, including heat pump installations. As of January 1, 2025, homeowners can finance up to $25,000 with terms ranging from 3 to 7 years, depending on income levels relative to the state median income.

Federal Tax Credits:
In addition to state incentives, residents can benefit from federal tax credits for installing qualifying heat pumps. The Federal 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit offers up to $2,000 annually for heat pump installations that meet specific efficiency criteria.

Eligibility and Participation:
To participate in these programs, residents must:

  1. Confirm Eligibility: Be a residential customer of participating Mass Save sponsors, such as Eversource, National Grid, or Unitil.
  2. Ensure Sufficient Weatherization: Homes must meet certain insulation and air sealing requirements for whole-home rebates. Mass Save provides insulation and air sealing services with steep discounts.
  3. Hire a Qualified Contractor: Beantown has been working with Mass Save for over 10 years and is fully qualified to expedite you through the process. Our unique ability to provide Instant Rebates and process all paperwork on your behalf ensures a buttery smooth experience.

By leveraging these incentives and programs, Massachusetts residents can improve their home’s energy efficiency, reduce utility bills, and contribute to environmental sustainability.

How do I know if my equipment is eligible for the Mass Save® HEAT Loan? How do I know if my equipment is eligible for the Mass Save® HEAT Loan?

We’ll work with you to determine eligibility – but in general, most equipment that has a Mass Save® rebate is also eligible for the HEAT Loan. Some heat pumps without rebates do also qualify; these are confirmed on a case-by-case basis. Peripheral equipment like humidifiers, air filters, and air cleaners are not eligible.
Possibly! The $10,000 Mass Save® rebate is given as a Whole House Heat Pump Rebate. This means the heat pumps must be capable of being the sole source of heating the home, the pre-existing heating system must be removed or disconnected, and homes must be occupied full time during the winter heating season.
Mass Save® offers rebates on eligible furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, and water heaters.

Beantown changed out a 12 year old water heater for a new one from the same manufacturer. Their two technicians, Ryan and Jay were very professional, skilled, helpful and calm throughout the project. The original exhaust pipes could not be re-used as codes had changed and the two service technicians had to creatively solve this problem. The resolution involved drilling a hole through the concrete4 foundation and exhausting the carbon monoxide into our courtyard. The job certainly took longer than they first anticipated, however, nevertheless Ryan and Jay remained pleasant, professional and upbeat. The price quoted stayed as the final price and the until is working perfectly. Great job.

We had a small leak in a copper pipe in the basement. Sean was thorough in identifying several pinpoint leaks in that pipe and how much of it actually needed to be replaced to prevent a more serious leak in the future. He also identified a couple of material options for replacing the pipe, explains the pros and cons of each. He was very courteous and professional. Did a nice job and we are very happy with the result.

Matthew was polite and professional. He quickly diagnosed the heat pump issue, then took the time to explain it to me. A little refrigerant later and we had heat. Just in time for the coldest days of the last three winters.

Booking online was super easy. I really appreciate the updates by email and text message.
